What does children’s dentistry involve?

Your child’s teeth need just as much care and attention as yours do, to keep them strong, healthy and able to function correctly. We welcome children of all ages to our practice, helping them feel comfortable with visiting the dentist and setting them up for a lifetime of excellent oral health.

We recommend you bring your children to your own routine dental check-up appointments from a very early age, showing them the dentist is nothing to be afraid of and letting them watch you in the chair. When their first tooth appears, usually when they are around six months old, we will begin taking a look inside their mouth to check everything is developing properly. As your child grows, they will be able to sit in the dental chair themselves and listen to our tips and advice about caring for their teeth at home and encouraging a healthy diet.

Useful tips for your child’s dental care at home

At W5 Dental Care, we are passionate about helping you keep your child’s teeth in great condition with excellent care at home. We are happy to give you tips and advice tailored to your child’s individual needs.

Babies and infants

When teeth begin to appear, you can start using a soft toothbrush and a smear of age-appropriate toothpaste to keep them clean and get your child used to caring for their teeth at home.

Children aged three to six

Once your child is three, you need to use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and should start brushing their teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. Encourage your child to brush their teeth first, then help them with the hard to reach areas, including nearer the back of the mouth and along the gumline. You can use a child-friendly timer or video to help your child learn how long they need to brush for.

Children aged seven onwards

Often, children are old enough to brush their teeth by themselves when they hit seven or eight years old. It’s important to check they are brushing for long enough and occasionally supervise the brushing to make sure they are using an effective technique. It’s a good idea to limit your child’s sugar intake too.

Frequently Asked Questions
How old should my child be when they first visit the dentist?

The younger your child is when they first experience visiting the dentist, the earlier it will become familiar and part of their routine. We suggest you bring your child along to your own dental check-up, especially if their first teeth have started to emerge. Often, children have had their first dental visit by the time they turn one.

How often do children need to visit the dentist?

You should bring your child for a check-up appointment at least once a year, so we can make sure their teeth are developing correctly and no problems are present. We may suggest you bring your child along to your regular check-ups in a family appointment every six months.

Do baby teeth need to be brushed?

Yes, baby teeth need to be brushed twice a day to prevent any problems or cavities from occurring. Although they are not permanent, baby teeth are important for speech development and chewing and need to be looked after.

Will my child find dental treatment painful?

We take a very gentle and calm approach to children’s dentistry, helping them feel comfortable in the dentist chair and practice surroundings. To begin with, we simply look in your child’s mouth to check their teeth are developing properly. As your child gets older, we begin to use dental tools, but nothing that will cause pain.
