What is gum disease?

Gum disease occurs when build-ups of plaque and bacteria are not properly cleaned away from your teeth and gums, causing irritation and inflammation. This early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis, and the symptoms include red, swollen and painful gums that often bleed when they are brushed.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more severe stage, periodontitis. The gums become detached from the tooth, forming pockets that fill with bacteria and slowly destroy gum and bone. Periodontitis can’t be reversed but can be managed with specialist treatment to stabilise the condition and save your natural teeth from becoming loose or even falling out.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the causes of gum disease?

Gum disease is caused by dental plaque build ups on your teeth. Some people are naturally more susceptible to gum disease, but poor oral hygiene is usually the most common cause. If plaque and bacteria deposits are not properly cleaned away, they harden and start to attack your gums. Smoking, stress and diabetes are all factors that are thought to hamper the immune response, which may increase the likelihood of gum disease occurring.

Why have periodontal treatment?

The purpose of periodontal treatment is to remove deposits of plaque and tartar from the pockets between your gum and tooth, thus halting the progress of the disease. If periodontal disease can be stabilised and managed, it is more likely that you will be able to keep your natural teeth. We use special instruments and our skills and experience to tailor your treatment and achieve great results.

Does periodontal treatment hurt?

We use local anaesthetic to manage your discomfort during your treatment, especially if we are reaching beyond your gum line to scale away plaque. The treatment will most likely be less painful than you are expecting. You may find your gums feel sore afterwards, but this is temporary.

How often do I need to have periodontal treatment?

We treat every patient as an individual, so the timeframe for periodontal treatment varies from patient to patient. At your first appointment, we will create a treatment plan, detailing your appointments and how long you should leave between these.

Is it worth seeing a periodontal specialist?

Periodontal specialists have undergone further in-depth training and qualifications to become experts in their field. We are fortunate to have a specialist working at our practice, delivering exceptional standards of treatment and care. Specialists can use more advanced tools and techniques to achieve excellent results. Your teeth and gums are in the best hands.
